Netflix has officially published the trailer for its next crime thriller series Dept. Q, a dark, character-driven adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s blockbuster novels. Matthew Goode stars as DCI Carl Morck, a smart but intolerable Edinburgh investigator whose grating attitude and sharp sarcasm have won him few friends on the force, in the series created, written, and directed by Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit).

Carl is demoted and transferred to the newly established Department Q—a cold case squad created more for political optics than police effectiveness—after a terrible event leaves a young constable dead and his partner paralysed. Carl starts to put together an improbable group of outcasts hidden away in a basement office and practically ignored by his superiors, all of whom have been marginalised but are eager to show their value.

The teaser hints at a moody, atmospheric series full of sharp dialogue, psychological depth, and a central mystery starting when Carl reopens the years-old missing civil servant case. Carl’s old instincts awaken as the enquiry deepens, and he goes back to his unyielding, no-nonsense quest for justice, shaking bars and uncovering wounds long believed buried.

Dept. Q has a writing team made up of Stephen Greenhorn, Colette Kane, and Chandni Lakhani; excellent supporting cast members including Chloe Pirrie, Alexej Manvelov, Kelly Macdonald, and Leah Byrne help to feature it. Premiering on May 29, 2025, the show offers an interesting mix of procedural grit and human intricacy, signalling yet another high-caliber addition to Netflix’s crime drama lineup.
