Assi Box Office Update and Kani Kusruti’s Language Barrier Remarks
The courtroom drama Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Taapsee Pannu and Kani Kusruti, continues to generate conversation for both its subject matter and its box office performance. Released in theatres on February 20, the film addresses sexual violence and the legal battle for justice. However, despite appreciation from critics and industry veterans, its commercial performance has remained modest.
Assi Box Office Sees Limited Growth After Opening Weekend
The Assi Box Office figures show a steady but underwhelming run in its first five days. The film opened with Rs 1 crore on day one and witnessed a weekend rise, collecting Rs 1.6 crore on both Saturday and Sunday.
Weekday numbers dipped significantly, falling below the Rs 1 crore mark. On day five, the film earned approximately Rs 85 lakh, taking its total India net collection to around Rs 5.75 crore. The marginal rise was reportedly aided by discounted ticket pricing.
With a reported production budget of around Rs 40 crore, the film has recovered only a fraction of its cost so far. Trade analysts suggest that unless the film witnesses a strong turnaround, its lifetime earnings may remain limited.
Javed Akhtar Praises Assi’s Emotional and Intellectual Depth
While the Assi Box Office performance has been restrained, the film has received high praise from veteran lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar.
Akhtar described the film as one that manages to appeal to both the heart and the mind. He observed that while some films work purely on an emotional level and others engage intellectually, very few manage to achieve both simultaneously. According to him, Assi raises serious questions without offering simplistic resolutions, encouraging audiences to reflect long after the credits roll.
The film marks the third collaboration between Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha after their earlier projects Mulk and Thappad. In Assi, Taapsee portrays a determined lawyer representing a Delhi woman fighting for justice after a brutal assault.
Kani Kusruti on Hindi Film Offers and Language Constraints
Kani Kusruti’s candid remarks about her career in Hindi cinema have become one of the most discussed aspects surrounding the film.
The Malayalam actor revealed that she often requests Bollywood filmmakers not to cast her due to her limited fluency in Hindi. She explained that memorising and delivering Hindi lines requires significant effort and time, and she does not believe she can learn the language quickly enough for mainstream projects.
For Assi, director Anubhav Sinha modified her character’s background to Kerala, allowing her to retain linguistic authenticity. Kusruti described herself as deeply rooted in Malayalam culture, stating that she continues to think in Malayalam and must consciously translate when speaking English.
Her remarks have sparked a wider discussion about language diversity within Indian cinema and the expectations placed on actors to adapt linguistically.
Portraying a Rape Survivor on Screen
In the film, Kusruti plays Parima, a rape survivor seeking justice in court. Speaking about filming the sensitive sequences, she described approaching the scenes with a clinical mindset, distinguishing fiction from real-life incidents.
She noted that actual news reports of sexual violence disturb her far more deeply than performing such scenes within a controlled cinematic environment. According to her, the emotional impact of real events remains far more intense than fictional portrayals.
Vigilante Justice and Changing Narratives
Beyond the courtroom drama, Assi also explores themes of vigilante justice. Kusruti questioned the continued prevalence of revenge-driven narratives in Indian cinema. She suggested that society has evolved and no longer requires simplistic saviour figures to drive stories forward.
She referenced how certain Malayalam films have subverted revenge tropes by using irony rather than glorification. In her view, contemporary storytelling can expand towards more complex and nuanced narratives rather than reinforcing patriarchal heroism.
Mixed Commercial Results, Ongoing Conversations
Despite modest Assi Box Office numbers, the film remains part of a broader cultural conversation. Critics have highlighted its performances and socially relevant themes. Yet, positive reviews have not translated into strong footfall.
Industry observers point to limited pre-release buzz and competitive releases as possible reasons for the slow commercial pace. As the film moves further into its theatrical run, its long-term trajectory remains uncertain.
What is evident, however, is that Assi has prompted meaningful discussion on justice, gender dynamics, and linguistic representation in Indian cinema, even if its box office numbers tell a more restrained story.
